About Cheryl

I teach yoga online (email me for details) and in person at Brock House, a Vancouver community centre for 55+.

Before training as a yoga instructor, my career was in dance. As a professional dancer and choreographer, I created, performed and toured with a number of renowned dance companies. For more than thirty years, I taught in the Dance Major Program at SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts.

As a dance teacher at the university level, I took special care to impart movement skills and habits that could prevent injury and potentially extend a dancer’s career. As a yoga teacher, I apply those same principles. I hope to help people of all skill levels, backgrounds and ages, improve their strength, flexibility and body awareness—and discover the joy of moving.

Certified in Yoga, Laban/Bartenieff and the Franklin Method

I have an extensive background in dance science and somatic practices. In addition to my certifications in Yoga and Restorative Yoga, I am a Certified Movement Analyst (CMA) in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies. I am also certified in the Level 1 Franklin Method. These practices inform and support my teaching.

After many years of practicing various styles of yoga, I discovered The Path Yoga Centre, a Vancouver studio under the direction of its principal teacher Swan. Under her guidance my practice deepened, and she continues to be an influential and inspiring teacher.

Under the direction of Swan and Nancy Frohlick, I became certified as a Yoga teacher, and now teach at The Path from time to time.

It Started With my Book Club

I began teaching Hatha yoga when members of my book club discovered that I was completing my yoga teaching certification, and asked me to teach them. Those classes—which began at a local yoga studio—went online when COVID struck. As COVID has changed our perspectives on in-class learning, the online classes have taken on a life of their own.
